Test Drive Meme!

Welcome to the Rekindle Test Drive!
Trying to see if a character will fit or work in the setting? Need some interaction samples? Well this meme is for you!

Make a post, tag around, and most importantly, have fun! Here's the setting page for those who want to learn a little more about the city itself.

Then don't forget to go reserve your character in a week when they open.

Here's some prompts to help you get started, if you need it:
Option 1
[While the days grow longer and warmer and the older, oriental-style of the city would normally make one think that the interiors would not be much in the way of relief from the hot sun, it may surprise the guest to see that the apartments the natives have allocated for them are surprisingly comfortable. In fact, the only modern convenience they may be missing is a television set! At least, outside the media floor on the first floor of Building One - the first of four inter-connected buildings.

In fact, each apartment building seems to have at least one different amenity on the first floor. In Building Two they seemed to even spare a library in another that seems to have the basics and some information packets that are otherwise found in the Welcome Center in District 2. There are even a few restaurants and common dining areas in the Building Three that are open until late at night, and meeting areas and a ballroom on the first floor in Building Four, perfect for setting up small parties or big events.

With the locals gone save those who work in the restaurants and the one librarian, leaving you to your own devices, what will you do? What mysteries could be left to discover in this place?]
Option 2
[With summer coming, the water level in the river is starting to go down, exposing some of the beach. The Riverside Shack is open late, and its restaurant is pulling out all the stops and offering seafood specials (even though a river is a far cry from an ocean). The rental store, meanwhile, is finally bringing out more of its swimming supplies, inner tubes and pool noodles, and a calmer stretch of the river has been roped off with buoys for swimming. They even have lifeguards chairs set up. Clearly this sort of thing used to be an annual event.

It's not quite an ocean beach (quite different actually), but there's still plenty of chance to have fun in the water. Or teach someone to swim, perhaps.]
Option 3
[If you're more inclined to explore or learn, the City's Learning Center might be more to your tastes. There certainly seems to be a lot going on here - there's laboratories and libraries and workshops, and plenty of communal areas where you can meet and talk with people. The natives seem pretty absorbed with their studies and work, though they're polite in brushing you off, at least.

Perhaps you'll have more luck seeing what other Guests such as yourself have discovered?]
Option 4
[Whoops. Looks like you haven't taken the cautionary words of the other NPCs to heart, or maybe you just wanted to take your chances. Either way, the withdrawal symptoms have started and you need to find someone to hug quickly before you get even more sick.]
Option 5
[If there's something else you wanted to play with, that you didn't see here, then have fun with that. You've just arrived in a strange city, after all. There's got to be plenty to explore out and about, not to mention people to meet.]

He smiled, the look subtle but nonetheless warm - she was very bright and innocent, both of which are qualities he has grown to value greatly; neither is often present in Mirkwood.

"What you say is true enough, but does not change that which my heart desires. Nor does it change the fact that I am needed, and the longer that I tarry here, the more harm may befall my realm in my absence. All the same you are correct in that such places are a wonder, and that the music of water is sweet. The sun, I fear, I am not as well acquainted with these long years as I would be, for all her warmth and beauty. Perhaps I should take the chance now to change that, as long as I am held."

"Oh, I'm sorry there's trouble going on at home, Mr. Elf. I'm sure that the other elves understand you didn't leave them willingly. Although, no one knows what is happening while we're away. I was taken right out of my home," she could only imagine how sad and worried her parents must be now.

"But ah, it's not all bad, we're helping this world too, right. And yes, I do think it's best to enjoy your time here. I'm not sure when we can leave but we may as well help and enjoy ourselves while we can, I suppose."

"Perhaps, but as their king I am responsible both to and for them." His voice is very matter of fact as he says this; it's a simple enough statement. "And although we cannot see, I may make a guess, if only because of the Shadow which has spread for a thousand years. It is only constant diligence that keeps it at bay, and allows us to live as we are accustomed. Ground not defended is ground lost, and if I am here...."

He sighs, and the sound is slight but still heartfelt.

"Though as I said, your council is wise. I shall endeavor to take your words to heart, Miss...?"
madcuriosity: (How do you do!)

"Oh! You're a king!" Well, Alice wasn't too surprised, as the elf gave off the feeling of such a thing. But it wasn't exactly Alice's first time meeting a king either. There had been the King of Hearts and the Red and White King. Although the red king had been asleep the entire time. But that was neither here nor there. "It's a pleasure to meet you, your majesty! You're the very first elf I've ever met, you know. And I don't know much about shadows," only that she was afraid of the dark. "But if a shadow has been spreading for so long, there is only so far a shadow can go, I think."

She offered the elf a curtsy in greeting.

"My name is Alice, your majesty! Alice Liddell. A pleasure to meet you. And thank you! I don't often get called wise!"

feel compelled to say how adorable your Alice is

He smiled, wryly. "Albeit one without a kingdom, so long as I remain here." And, even taking into account that the kings she had previously met were not quite normal, a fairly different one - Thranduil was king of a woodland realm first and a monarch second. His crown when he had been brought was made of autumn leaves and berries. It was no longer in the condition it had been, which was depressing. Were he home, the wood-elves would have created another.

He inclined his head again in acknowledgement of the curtsey, a little smile still playing about his lips.

"That would be more true were it not cast across the forest. It is only through constant effort that we keep it from deepening in the corner we claim as our own. For, you see, one must always combat the spread of darkness, lest it take hold entire."
madcuriosity: (I'm paying attention)

Thank you very much! :D <3

"Well, a king away from his kingdom doesn't stop him form suddenly being a king. I'm from England, simply not being in England doesn't stop me from being English." And she was quite proud of being English, thank you. And should the elf king ever ask, Alice would be happy to make him a crown of flowers and wood. She actually excels quite well in the making of daisy crowns. Perhaps not as regal as his wood and berries, but she would do it regardless if asked.

But she hadn't been and she knew no better.

"Forests can be terribly dark all on their own..." and Alice was so very scared of the dark. "Couldn't you shine a light on the darkness? Surely there is a light that is strong enough?"

Figurative and metaphorical or actual darkness aside, Alice was rather sure the way to combat the dark was with light.

Come spring, his crown was made of flowers - a daisy crown would be entirely appropriate, and most welcome. He smiled at her logic - children could put things so simply, and so well.

"They can be," he acknowledged, "but they can be places of beauty and wonder as well. The forest of my home was Greenwood the Great before the coming of the Shadow. It is called Mirkwood now, or by some Taur-e-Ndaedelos, and much of its beauty has been obscured by darkness. I cannot cast a light bright enough to drive it wholly away." He seems a little sad at the admission. "Only one that is bright enough to cast one small net of protection, and of relative safety."
madcuriosity: (Oh how curious!)

[personal profile] madcuriosity 2013-05-15 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, then feel free to ask, your majesty, Alice will be happy to do it.

"Why must you fight alone, sir? If everyone shines light on it, then many lights against one shadow should be more than enough!"

[personal profile] woodking 2013-05-15 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps when they are better aquainted. She has no obligation to him, she is not a wood-elf nor is this Mirkwood. He would not wish to impose any with no better excuse than for his own majesty. There's more important things to do.

"This Shadow is very great," he explained, voice quite soft but still with a touch of weariness, "and not so easy to oppose. It takes the strength of all my people in addition to my own to stave off the brunt. If more would join us perhaps there is more that could be done, but we have been left to fend it off as best we can these many years."
madcuriosity: (I don't know where I am)

[personal profile] madcuriosity 2013-05-16 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
"All your people are helping against the shadow? Why won't anyone else help you? Or... is there no one else to help, sire?" how terribly sad! Was he and his people the only ones left? But no, he said that others needed to come help. So why didn't they?

"Are other people not scared of the shadow?"

"They are there, but those who are able have little interest." It is slightly galling, for all that being able to hold off its progression on their own is something which he can and does take pride in. Thranduil is independent, especially after so long. Few are there who could survive as his people have done in Mirkwood.

"Others are not affected as we are, through power or through distance." There was still something terribly unfair that his people had fought for survival for so many years, and Lothlorien and the realm of Galadriel was so much closer to Dol Guldur than the corner of Mirkwood he had claimed for his own, and yet felt not the affects of its proximity as his kingdom did.
madcuriosity: (My rabbit)

[personal profile] madcuriosity 2013-05-17 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Even if they're not affected that is very rude that they won't help you, your majesty. If a nasty shadow befell them, they would want help!" she shook her head.

"I'm sorry no one wants to help you, sire. I'm sure you'll be alright, though! You can't give up and your people shan't give uo either!
woodking: (boo you whore)

[personal profile] woodking 2013-05-17 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
"And it has been given," he told her, still almost with an edge of resentment, or pride, but it was no good, and he forced himself to let it go. "But all peoples must face their trials in their time and place."

He smiled a little, wistfully.

"And, little one, that was why I was concerned. For how am I to fight it when I am here?"
madcuriosity: (A curious riddle)

[personal profile] madcuriosity 2013-05-17 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, perhaps by seeing you gone, others shall realize that help is needed! Perhaps that was why you were brought here specifically, sire. It's very possible I should think."
woodking: (I hear his hair's insured for $10000)

[personal profile] woodking 2013-05-17 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"It is a good thought." Even if he didn't consider it very likely. "Perhaps I shall return home to find it better than I left."
madcuriosity: (This sounds like so much fun!)

[personal profile] madcuriosity 2013-05-18 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh!" Alice clapped her hands together. "Wouldn't that be lovely, sire! Your people and everyone else coming to help fight the nasty shadow!"
woodking: (Default)

[personal profile] woodking 2013-05-20 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
Would that it were that simple, Alice. He was dealing with thousands of years of politics here.

"It would. Still, I would prefer being home, where I could fight it myself. If things do not go so smoothly as that-" and, in his experience, they really never do, "-then I am sure I will be needed. As I was saying before."

Useless. There was nothing he could do. Stop focusing on it.

"Tell me about yourself."
madcuriosity: (I don't know where I am)

[personal profile] madcuriosity 2013-05-20 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"Myself? Oh, I'm not all that interesting, sire. But you know, it's a rather difficult question to answer when someone tells you about themself, because someone is bound to want to hear something specifically but not ask for it by name. So people talk and talk and sorts to try and find something interesting about themselves when might have been easier and faster to just ask the question you wanted answered in the first place.... Oh ah, not that I think you mean to do that," she quickly ammended so as not to offend. "But in general I suppose I mean to say, your majesty. It's just, well... what could you possibly wish to know about me?"
woodking: (I hear his hair's insured for $10000)

[personal profile] woodking 2013-05-23 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
He smiled a little. This child was certainly unique. "I hadn't given it much thought, though it hardly seems fair that you should know as much as you do about me, and I should know so little about you." Not, perhaps, that she knew that much, but the conversation thus far certainly had centered on him.
madcuriosity: (Oh what is this?)

[personal profile] madcuriosity 2013-05-23 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, what is it you would like to know about me? That's a much easier thing to answer."
