When I say 'end the world', it's called an Impact event. It's something that changes the world completely; adapts it for a new life form. We've had two proper, two aborted; First Impact seeded the Earth for human life, Second Impact killed off a good third of the global population, the Near-Third Impact killed off the rest.
We just had a Near-Fourth, but I don't think that actually killed anyone. No-one left alive in the area anyway.
[she sighs]
After the Second, we were under attack. Angels - I honestly haven't the faintest clue what they actually were - coming down to set off an Impact on their terms, wiping out the rest of us just as a byproduct. The Evas were our only effective defence. And a stab in the back; a few mad old men planning to perform their own Impact thinking it would ascend humanity to godhood or something. They caused Second Impact, they'd planned the Near-Third. Once we found that part out... well, it was a little too late for the human race.
I'm part of an organisation - basically the only people left - dedicated to destroying them and preventing that from happening again. The crazy bastards are still around, still trying to set one off proper. We'll have to destroy all the remaining Evangelions, but you kind of need an Evangelion to do that in the first place. Hence, I pilot. Have a team mate too; Mari. She's pink and annoying; she turns up, tell her I said hi.
