Test Drive Meme!

Welcome to the Rekindle Test Drive!
Trying to see if a character will fit or work in the setting? Need some interaction samples? Well this meme is for you!

Make a post, tag around, and most importantly, have fun! Here's the setting page for those who want to learn a little more about the city itself.

Then don't forget to go reserve your character in a week when they open.

Here's some prompts to help you get started, if you need it:
Option 1
[While the days grow longer and warmer and the older, oriental-style of the city would normally make one think that the interiors would not be much in the way of relief from the hot sun, it may surprise the guest to see that the apartments the natives have allocated for them are surprisingly comfortable. In fact, the only modern convenience they may be missing is a television set! At least, outside the media floor on the first floor of Building One - the first of four inter-connected buildings.

In fact, each apartment building seems to have at least one different amenity on the first floor. In Building Two they seemed to even spare a library in another that seems to have the basics and some information packets that are otherwise found in the Welcome Center in District 2. There are even a few restaurants and common dining areas in the Building Three that are open until late at night, and meeting areas and a ballroom on the first floor in Building Four, perfect for setting up small parties or big events.

With the locals gone save those who work in the restaurants and the one librarian, leaving you to your own devices, what will you do? What mysteries could be left to discover in this place?]
Option 2
[With summer coming, the water level in the river is starting to go down, exposing some of the beach. The Riverside Shack is open late, and its restaurant is pulling out all the stops and offering seafood specials (even though a river is a far cry from an ocean). The rental store, meanwhile, is finally bringing out more of its swimming supplies, inner tubes and pool noodles, and a calmer stretch of the river has been roped off with buoys for swimming. They even have lifeguards chairs set up. Clearly this sort of thing used to be an annual event.

It's not quite an ocean beach (quite different actually), but there's still plenty of chance to have fun in the water. Or teach someone to swim, perhaps.]
Option 3
[If you're more inclined to explore or learn, the City's Learning Center might be more to your tastes. There certainly seems to be a lot going on here - there's laboratories and libraries and workshops, and plenty of communal areas where you can meet and talk with people. The natives seem pretty absorbed with their studies and work, though they're polite in brushing you off, at least.

Perhaps you'll have more luck seeing what other Guests such as yourself have discovered?]
Option 4
[Whoops. Looks like you haven't taken the cautionary words of the other NPCs to heart, or maybe you just wanted to take your chances. Either way, the withdrawal symptoms have started and you need to find someone to hug quickly before you get even more sick.]
Option 5
[If there's something else you wanted to play with, that you didn't see here, then have fun with that. You've just arrived in a strange city, after all. There's got to be plenty to explore out and about, not to mention people to meet.]

Inspector Javert| Les Miserables| Option 4

[personal profile] lawrisnotmocked 2013-05-14 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Javert had never been a man accustomed to much in the way of physical contact where it was not needed. In order to do the job, he had, of course, been forced to resort to it, but generally, every other use of it made his flesh crawl at the idea that one would be so intimate with a stranger, reminded him of what little he remembered of where he had come from and would not be sinking back into, thank you very much.

Which was how he found himself staggering about, the glare on his face deepening as he fought off a wave of nausea to stand, and stroll about as usual. Whether or not he would seek the contact on his own was still debatable. He was certain he had endured, and would endure worse when this God foresaken nightmare ended, but he was not in a position to turn it away either, should it be required.

Damn.

[The gold eyes of a cat regard the inspector coolly from atop a fence. The tip of the cat's tail twitches idly from side to side. Really. Some of the people here are so stubborn sometimes. Ah, well. That's what Yoruichi is here for.]

[Alighting to the ground in a smooth drop, the cat pads over toward Javert with a plaintive meow, and begins to wind about his ankles. Who needs a buddy?]

[A cat. Of all things, it would be a cat. On the one hand there is no question of having to beg permission from the others here of a cat most likely. On the other..Javert sighs, looking down at the cat when he hears the meow.]

A question of death or one of dignity. I take it you would not mind.

[And he is bending to at least scratch its ears a bit. He does not entirely mind cats at least, so there is that.]

[personal profile] ihascheezburger 2013-05-14 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
[In response, Yoruichi purrs. The gold eyes close, and the cat tips its head back to better enjoy the skritching. There are perks to providing an ample source of affection, after all. No, the cat does not mind the attention one little bit, tail erect, back arched.]

[The cat may even choose to speak later, but not until Yoruichi is certain that doing so wouldn't break the poor man's mind. Let him deal with something stranger than talking cats first, then they can have a chat.]

[This is, well, it is hardly something he would do under ordinary circumstances but Javert does have to admit there is something soothing about this as he moves on to actually petting the cat instead.]

Well. A most unusual state of affairs, cat. [And he is nodding to the creature in turn, but this is more of a nod of respect because the cat seems to understand entirely what he is in need of. How? That is the type of question he does not wish to consider as of yet.] I owe you a thank you.

Mrrrrrrow.

[Yoruichi's response is a pleasant, trilling purr. Oh, what fun she could have with this one! Stiff, but noble-hearted beneath the prickly exterior. Perhaps a visit is in order later on, when the cat guise has been shed~.]

[For now, Javert is thankfully not being teased. Just rubbed up on, with a contented purr rumbling in that furry throat.]

[personal profile] lawrisnotmocked 2013-05-19 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
[And that purr? It's very pleasant actually. Javert knows it is foolish and he feels silly and awkward about enjoying it, but the cat does make him feel, in some strange way, comforted.]

I'll admit I find this...not as repugnant as I might. You make for quite convincing company, little cat. I will grant you so much.

[His hand gets a light and playful bat of the paw. Yoruichi has no objections to Javert's company either, so he can expect more of the same should he need it.]

Lee Scoresby, His Dark Materials :)

[personal profile] texanaeronaut 2013-05-14 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Lee, on the other hand, enjoyed him some physical contact, whether with friends or lady-friends, even though he spent most of his time living along in his balloon. It had taught him to cherish what he did get, so this place was really rather pleasant to him.

But more than that, he was one to generally move to help someone who looked like they were in trouble. Since he hadn't yet experienced any withdrawl, the sight of someone staggering sideways as if he might run into a wall prompted the lanky aeronaut to duck under Javert's arm to support him.

"Whoops, careful there, fella."

That was, in and of itself embarrassing, but there was little more to do at the state that he was in, was there not? Still, Javert felt himself becoming a bit ashamed at the need for the circumstance at all, and for his weakness. Oh, he knew part of it was this cursed place, wherever it was, but even so. Even so, he could not help but wish to disappear a little. But he would be polite for the sake of the man who was helping him now.

"Ah...yes." he managed. "I did not heed the proper warnings. My apologies, sir."

[personal profile] texanaeronaut 2013-05-15 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Proper warnings?" Lee repeated in mild confusion.

Hester, the rangy hare that hopped up behind him, explained: "Them warnings about keepin' up the touch. This feller's in withdrawal. If he ain't drunk, anyhow."

"Pretty sure he ain't drunk, it's to early for that," Lee countered, and led Javert towards the nearest bench to let him sit, keeping an arm around him while en route. "There now. No apologies needed."

[personal profile] lawrisnotmocked 2013-05-16 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Rhose would unfortunately be the..." Javert blinked at who had spoken. The hare was actually... The warnings had spoken of hallucinations but even so, speaking animals was the sort of thing one did not associate seeing things with due to being deprived of any contact. It would be entirely new.

"And I am hardly drunk." he agreed. It was far too early, and he was not one who drank at any rate. "My thanks then. I had not expected it to take me by so much surprise."

[personal profile] texanaeronaut 2013-05-16 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Lee dropped himself down next to Javert on the bench, looking amiable but still concerned. "No problem at all. I'm Lee Scoresby, by the way. That there's Hester."

The hare flicked an ear at him and inclined her head, as if saying hello herself.

"You been pretty much keepin' to yerself, so far, then?" Lee continued, guessing from what Hester had guessed about withdrawal.

[personal profile] lawrisnotmocked 2013-05-19 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Monsieur Scoresby." And the accent is a bit odd to Javert's ears, the more that he is considering it. "You are...American, perhaps? He has had occasion, a very few times in his life to meet those visitors from America and it does sound similar to this man and his hare, though there is something a bit more pronounced about it.

Strange, he muses, but gives the hare a small nod in return. If she is the type of being that the rest of them are, ridiculous as that sounds, then she must be treated with respect as well.

"And I'm Javert, and have been, yes. I am not accustomed to such close contact and had thought this talk of withdrawing a bit exaggerated." Things are clearly NOT like this where he is from.

"Close, but not quite. Republic of Texas. Guessin' yer from France, if yer callin' me Mon-soor like that." He butchers the pronunciation, sorry, Javert. Hester settles back on her haunches on the sidewalk in front of them, as if keeping an eye on them both.

"'Pparently it ain't so exaggerated. Gonna be an adjustment all around, I guess, eh?" He pats Javert's shoulder in sympathy. "Better find some folks you don't mind gettin' some touch from, I guess."
