Welcome to the Rekindle Test Drive!Trying to see if a character will fit or work in the setting? Need some interaction samples? Well this meme is for you! Make a post, tag around, and most importantly, have fun! Here's the setting page for those who want to learn a little more about the city itself. Then don't forget to go reserve your character in a week when they open. Here's some prompts to help you get started, if you need it: | | Option 1 | [While the days grow longer and warmer and the older, oriental-style of the city would normally make one think that the interiors would not be much in the way of relief from the hot sun, it may surprise the guest to see that the apartments the natives have allocated for them are surprisingly comfortable. In fact, the only modern convenience they may be missing is a television set! At least, outside the media floor on the first floor of Building One - the first of four inter-connected buildings.
In fact, each apartment building seems to have at least one different amenity on the first floor. In Building Two they seemed to even spare a library in another that seems to have the basics and some information packets that are otherwise found in the Welcome Center in District 2. There are even a few restaurants and common dining areas in the Building Three that are open until late at night, and meeting areas and a ballroom on the first floor in Building Four, perfect for setting up small parties or big events.
With the locals gone save those who work in the restaurants and the one librarian, leaving you to your own devices, what will you do? What mysteries could be left to discover in this place?] | | Option 2 | [With summer coming, the water level in the river is starting to go down, exposing some of the beach. The Riverside Shack is open late, and its restaurant is pulling out all the stops and offering seafood specials (even though a river is a far cry from an ocean). The rental store, meanwhile, is finally bringing out more of its swimming supplies, inner tubes and pool noodles, and a calmer stretch of the river has been roped off with buoys for swimming. They even have lifeguards chairs set up. Clearly this sort of thing used to be an annual event.
It's not quite an ocean beach (quite different actually), but there's still plenty of chance to have fun in the water. Or teach someone to swim, perhaps.] | | Option 3 | [If you're more inclined to explore or learn, the City's Learning Center might be more to your tastes. There certainly seems to be a lot going on here - there's laboratories and libraries and workshops, and plenty of communal areas where you can meet and talk with people. The natives seem pretty absorbed with their studies and work, though they're polite in brushing you off, at least.
Perhaps you'll have more luck seeing what other Guests such as yourself have discovered?] | | Option 4 | [Whoops. Looks like you haven't taken the cautionary words of the other NPCs to heart, or maybe you just wanted to take your chances. Either way, the withdrawal symptoms have started and you need to find someone to hug quickly before you get even more sick.] | | Option 5 | [If there's something else you wanted to play with, that you didn't see here, then have fun with that. You've just arrived in a strange city, after all. There's got to be plenty to explore out and about, not to mention people to meet.] |

[Asuka keeps on walking up. If you're paying attention, her plugsuit will look notably different; red and white rather than red all over. Slightly longer hair. Without, of course, mentioning the eyepatch.
If nothing else, you have the air. This isn't some tantrum. This isn't some child beating against the walls of her own psyche. This is a very specific, personal loathing, aimed directly at you.
She stops, quite within punching distance, hands balled into fists by her side.]
Fourth Impact. You wanted to run away that badly? What had it been, two weeks?
no subject
[The subtle differences, the tiny nuances that should be picked up on, are on some level registered. They're mostly ignored however by the shock triggered by her words. Fourth Impact. Not Third. Fourth. He can't help but stare, confusion clearly evident on his face.]
Fourth impact...? What are you talking about? There hasn't even been a Third! You shouldn't say such things, Asuka...
[Her demeanor toward him is clearly full of loathing. This isn't childish jealousy or rivalry. This is hatred.
He'd shrink back from it if he wasn't so confused.]
no subject
Like all that had never happened?]
...What the hell are you talking about. You caused both of them.
no subject
This however...this was ridiculous. He had caused not only Third but Fourth Impact as well? That was insane! Sure, Impact might've started and had happened if Kaworu had followed his instincts and Shinji hadn't the spine to actually crush him but he'd done so. He'd killed the Angel, someone who supposedly loved him, to save a world that hated him.
Instead of trigger it, he'd done the complete opposite.]
No...No I didn't.
[It isn't denial, at least, it isn't completely. This boy, this Shinji is free from that sin for now. It may be tacked onto his list of sins later on, but for now he's free of the guilt.]
Why would you say something like that? I...I killed the angel. I killed Kaworu-kun. I didn't trigger anything!
no subject
[Something isn't right..
There's something definitely wrong. Something in his words, something in his stance, something in the way he looks at her.
Denial doesn't fit. Kaworu? Not a name she knows. But Angels didn't have names; certainly not the one he fought to set off Third Impact. She'd know. They'd know. It'd be in all the documents they recovered when WILLE and the UN dismantled the old NERV headquarters.
Something isn't right.
She falls silent, watching, glaring, ticking things over in her mind and trying to find a conclusion that actually makes sense. Time travel? Hah, she must be getting senile. Memory suppression? But that doesn't add up.
...Trauma? Memory creation? Couldn't hide in the past so he invented something new...
Her eyes narrow.]
no subject
There's something eerie about Asuka. She's...quiet. She isn't yelling or screaming or grabbing him by his collar. She isn't threatening to punch him in the face. The details he'd ignored until now start to be picked at by his mind. Eye patch - something happened here. Her hair is longer, even though she'd probably berate him for noticing such a fact. Her suit too is different in parts. It's not the same. Maybe it's a spare?
Things aren't adding up. It's starting to make him nervous.
If there's one thing Asuka can't deny it's that the way Shinji presents himself right now, the way he still manages to stand despite wanting to curl away, the fact he still, despite his own self loathing, is still standing and living and still very much facing her head on that is unmistakably different from the boy she dragged out of the entry plug and through a desert.
This boy still has a will, despite how fractured and damaged it may be. He hasn't fallen over the edge just yet.]
...Blame me for whatever you want, call me a coward or any awful names you can come up with...but don't blame me for causing something that hasn't even happened yet.
no subject
Third Impact hadn't happened...
There's one, very easy, response to that.
Wordlessly, without breaking eye contact with her one good eye, she uncurls her fist. With very forced, very deliberate calm, she silently raises her hand, and taps the eye patch under her hair.
Third Impact never happened? Then explain this.]
no subject
But it makes no sense.]
I don't understand...
[He's talking to himself rather than her at this point.]
It never happened...Third Impact never happened...I killed Kaworu-kun...Misato-san spoke with me after...how could it have happened?
[He shakes his head, wanting to step back, wanting to distance himself from Asuka, but stands firmly in place. This is worse than any phantom, worse than any ghost.]
...I don't know what happened to your eye. I don't. But I'm not lying when I say Third Impact never happened yet. I would never lie about that. Never. I don't even know how someone could lie about that...

But there's no reason to invent a Fifth Child... is there?]
There was never a Fifth Child. We never got that far.

[And he nearly killed him.]
no subject
[it genuinely takes her a moment to remember who that even is; she practically sputters when she finally remembers the name]
-The jock?! The Jock wasn't even a Child!
Mari's Mari! Mari Makinami! Pinkie, Four-Eyes, the Favourite! The UN girl; managed to land on you with a parachute to say hi and then never fucking shut up about it for fourteen years!
no subject
I've never met her before. And...And he was a Child! The Eva he was in went crazy and...and...
[His hands ball into fists as he stands, turning his gaze back to the water's surface.]
My father told me to kill him. To destroy the Eva...but I didn't want to! I wouldn't! So he took over and nearly killed him himself! Don't tell me that he wasn't a Child - not when he nearly died because of me!
no subject
[Wrong.
This is completely wrong.
Everything he's saying is wrong.
But that's the clincher.]
That was me.
I was the one who took the Unit-03 assignment. I was the one inside the plug when the Angel took over. The Dummy Plug system, wasn't it? Because you refused to fight.
Shinji. What is going on here?
no subject
...I don't know. None of this makes sense! But it wasn't you in there, it was him.
1/?
Well shit.
She relaxes a little, no longer glaring you in the eye. This isn't Shinji Ikari. She looks away, suddenly tired; all that pent up anger for nothing.]
It's how I lost my eye. That's definitely what happened to me. You snapped, nearly trashed Headquaters and killed Gendo - nice try, by the way - got thrown out... and then the Tenth Angel came.
I'm out. You're in exile. Unit 00 still hasn't completed repairs. The First actually goes after it with an N2 missile. [she snorts, half in admiration. With the benefit of hindsight, she can recognise Rei - or that Rei - had a lot of fight in her. A lot of life. A pity the same couldn't be said of the barely living clones NERV spewed out after.] Mari takes Unit 02 and even activates the Beast Mode. Not enough.
no subject
Which is when you happened. You got back in Unit 01, went straight on the attack. But that failed too. Ran out of power. You were always bad with that. Unit 01 shuts down, with the Tenth-Hybrid hammering on the core.
And then you snap.
Eva activates fully, as it was always meant to. Unit One isn't a fighting machine, it's a trigger for the Third Impact. You went berserk, and destroyed the Tenth Angel, using the full power of Eva to pull Rei right out of the Core. [she snorts] Or you thought you did.
/done
It never worked. Nerv recovers Unit 01. Secret's out now; disbanded by the UN. Ex-NERV staff reform into the special organisation 'WILLE', dedicated to preventing Fourth Impact, destroying the remaining Angels and destroying what's left of NERV. Your father escapes. Only remaining pilot is Mari and one ain't enough, so they wake up me. Takes several months before they've even convinced I'm human. World goes to shit.
[she sits, dropping down with a little 'flump' onto the sand, the gentle waves pouring over her feet.]
An Evangelion war. That's what people were always afraid of, you know? We practically ended everything. NERV was even producing artificial Angels themselves by the end of it. Your father really is a genius, apart from when he isn't insane. They fired you up into orbit so no-one could get to Unit 01; we pulled you down 14 years later. Needed the Unit. Don't ask.
You didn't know a thing. What were we to say? An Ayanami clone shows up and 'rescues' you from us, and you run right along thinking it's the same one. You brat. Like one person's worth ending the world. Like one's desires are worth that much.
'Bout a week later, you're at it again. Rejoined your father, God knows why, piloting again, God alone knows why...
Fourth Impact. You did it again. Babbling about changing the world. We manage to stop you but you've practically ended the world twice. Not even your father can boast that one. Congratulations.
Congratulations. I'm so done.
He feels as if he's going to be sick.]
I...
[What is he supposed to say to that? How is he supposed to respond? He's speechless, fingers quivering. It's like taking an egg and trying to swallow it whole, shell and all. He's choking, his chest is tight. For now, he's speechless. Give him a moment, Asuka. Being congratulated on ruining the world twice kind of takes a toll on a person.]
I KIND OF HAD TO
Welcome to the rest of your life, Shinji Ikari. Once again.]
Everything is beautiful and Eva hurts.
[He's not saying that you're lying - goodness no - not after everything he's heard. There's no way anyone would make up a story like that. He just doesn't understand it. How can fourteen years pass and one not look any older?]
How is that possible?
[Then again, how is any of this possible?]

The same will happen to you, probably.
