Test Drive Meme!

Welcome to the Rekindle Test Drive!
Trying to see if a character will fit or work in the setting? Need some interaction samples? Well this meme is for you!

Make a post, tag around, and most importantly, have fun! Here's the setting page for those who want to learn a little more about the city itself.

Then don't forget to go reserve your character in a week when they open.

Here's some prompts to help you get started, if you need it:
Option 1
[While the days grow longer and warmer and the older, oriental-style of the city would normally make one think that the interiors would not be much in the way of relief from the hot sun, it may surprise the guest to see that the apartments the natives have allocated for them are surprisingly comfortable. In fact, the only modern convenience they may be missing is a television set! At least, outside the media floor on the first floor of Building One - the first of four inter-connected buildings.

In fact, each apartment building seems to have at least one different amenity on the first floor. In Building Two they seemed to even spare a library in another that seems to have the basics and some information packets that are otherwise found in the Welcome Center in District 2. There are even a few restaurants and common dining areas in the Building Three that are open until late at night, and meeting areas and a ballroom on the first floor in Building Four, perfect for setting up small parties or big events.

With the locals gone save those who work in the restaurants and the one librarian, leaving you to your own devices, what will you do? What mysteries could be left to discover in this place?]
Option 2
[With summer coming, the water level in the river is starting to go down, exposing some of the beach. The Riverside Shack is open late, and its restaurant is pulling out all the stops and offering seafood specials (even though a river is a far cry from an ocean). The rental store, meanwhile, is finally bringing out more of its swimming supplies, inner tubes and pool noodles, and a calmer stretch of the river has been roped off with buoys for swimming. They even have lifeguards chairs set up. Clearly this sort of thing used to be an annual event.

It's not quite an ocean beach (quite different actually), but there's still plenty of chance to have fun in the water. Or teach someone to swim, perhaps.]
Option 3
[If you're more inclined to explore or learn, the City's Learning Center might be more to your tastes. There certainly seems to be a lot going on here - there's laboratories and libraries and workshops, and plenty of communal areas where you can meet and talk with people. The natives seem pretty absorbed with their studies and work, though they're polite in brushing you off, at least.

Perhaps you'll have more luck seeing what other Guests such as yourself have discovered?]
Option 4
[Whoops. Looks like you haven't taken the cautionary words of the other NPCs to heart, or maybe you just wanted to take your chances. Either way, the withdrawal symptoms have started and you need to find someone to hug quickly before you get even more sick.]
Option 5
[If there's something else you wanted to play with, that you didn't see here, then have fun with that. You've just arrived in a strange city, after all. There's got to be plenty to explore out and about, not to mention people to meet.]

Their claim when we arrived was that "physical contact as a power source" story. They apparently require our willing cooperation, so they aren't likely to kill us, and actually attempting contact does produce a...soothing feeling of sorts, I suppose. So from all that, there certainly seems to be some truth to what they've said. The question is, how much?

[evidently, he's already given a great deal of though to that himself. the smile slips away again while he works through a few theories, a bit too distracted by the puzzle here and he situation as a whole to try juggling both this and keeping up appearances perfectly.]

At this point, I'd say there are a few possibilities. Perhaps they're being entirely truthful about everything they have said. They still have not answered every question, however, so it seems more likely that they're hidig something. If this contact system is indeed helping them in some way, then perhaps they're lying about the backlash that can occur if one doesn't cooperate? A scare tactic to help encourage those here into participating, if their requesting it alone isn't enough. Then there's the question of what exactly they're gaining through this system, and if they haven't been upfront about it because we would be opposed to helping if we knew...

[The idea of turning contact into a power source is utterly ridiculous in his mind. Unless their captors expect everyone in the city to wear generators at all times, Artemis can't see how it's possible.

Then again, he's proven the impossible before. There must be some secret behind it, and so help him, he's certain he'll find it.

Artemis doesn't respond for a moment, slightly taken aback at all the explaining his new companion is spilling out. It's not every day Artemis doesn't have to explain every single detail himself to less-than-observant people around him. Looks like he's found himself a possible reliable ally. What was it that Holly said? Friends by trauma? Something similar to that.]

We'd have to test their limits and see if there really is any truth to their tales - which is likely what they want us to do, though it seems we don't have any other leads right now. It's rather convenient for them, isn't it?

[it does sound ridiculous. but that was the first thing he tested here, and it certainly had helped with the initial sick feeling upon arriving here. perhaps it's just a familiarity with magic that makes it easier for him to accept (but then, arty shouldn't have much of a problem with that either).

he really is talking a lot, unfortunately rather prone to that whole "villainous exposition" bit (hopefully without the "villainous" part these days), but he isn't exactly used to people inputting much at these moments, especially not anything useful. he looks back over his new acquaintance for a moment with honey gold eyes, cool and appraising, before smirking slightly.]

Test this backlash claim, you mean? Exactly what I was thinking. Are you volunteering?

I'd prefer not to make myself the laboratory rat - but unless you can think of others more willing to volunteer for me, I may as well try it myself.

[Shame that Artemis hasn't run into anyone he knows here so far. Mulch would have been a great volunteer in this case.]
lavenderglasses: (♦he spends way too much time on boats)

[personal profile] lavenderglasses 2013-06-06 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
How generous of you. But I'm sure others could be convinced to try it.

[and he's very good at "convincing" others to do what he wants. nice to know that this one would do it willingly if needed, but it does seem like a waste to risk someone who can actually manage to think of these things on his own.]

[personal profile] goldcomplex 2013-06-06 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[So the stranger thinks he's better off not volunteering. How interesting. Artemis will definitely have to talk to him more once he's gotten properly settled in the city. A public space like a library isn't always the safest place to chat.]

Oh? And are you volunteering to convince these people?
lavenderglasses: (♦how did you expect that to go)

[personal profile] lavenderglasses 2013-06-06 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I can certainly try. I've been told I'm very persuasive.

[he can't say either way how likely it is that intentionally going without any physical contact will actually cause any harm, but he's rather find someone a bit more suited to that risk. more expendable, at least.]

[That kind of tone almost reminds Artemis of fairies using mesmer on humans. But it's a bit of a stretch, and as far as he can tell, this man appears to be human.

It raises a dozen other questions, particularly if this land has its own magic or strange creatures. He may have to walk around and explore after all. If only he hadn't used up the small bit of fairy magic he stole a year ago; then he could finds answers to that easily.]

Well, I'll let you try it, then. Do keep me updated.

[He extends a hand.] Also - my name is Artemis Fowl.

[appearances can be deceiving. you should know that by now.]

It's nice to meet you, Artemis. [there's no such thing as greek myth where he comes from, so not so much as a raised eyebrow about that name. he's all sweet smiles instead, taking that hand with a firm but gentle grip -- absolutely a politician's handshake.] My name is Saralegui.
goldcomplex: (unknown)

[personal profile] goldcomplex 2013-06-06 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[Fair point.

Artemis is all business in his handshake, though he seems to pause for a moment. There's a strange feeling when they connect hands, and Artemis almost wants to say he feels a little calmer. He must just be surprised at himself for making a new friend so easily. The feeling lingers just a bit when he pulls his hand away.]
And the same to you.
lavenderglasses: (♦HEY COME VISIT ME)

[personal profile] lavenderglasses 2013-06-06 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[goddammit artemis you are way too smart to be leaving anything to coincidence, you antisocial little jerk.

saralegui, at least, has no issues about touching others so he's already experimented with this a decent amount. he's not quite so touchy-feely as some people he knows though, so while he isn't surprised, he makes no attempt to draw the contact out regardless of the pleasant feelings it creates. besides, that would be doing exactly what they want him to, and he's just contrary enough to be uncooperative.]

I suppose you'll want to do your own research now? Have fun. [and he stands up, leaving the other books he'd pulled out where they are on the table in case artemis felt like having a look.]
